The Vernon Patao Mission: Meet The Board

  • Eric T. Chang, President

    Eric is Vice President & General Manager of Servco Maui. Chang’s responsibilities include oversight of Servco’s automotive operations for both the Lexus and Subaru dealerships on Maui.

    He has served as a board member for Hale Mahaolu since 2020 and has previously served as a Director on the Shilder Alumni Association Board prior to moving back home to Maui in 2013.

    Eric is a proud graduate of H.P. Baldwin High School, has a Bachelor’s degree in Japanese Language & Literature from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and holds a Master’s of Business Administration from the Shidler College of Business.

  • Georgie Tamayose, Secretary

    Born and raised in Hawaii, Georgianna pursued a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration at Gonzaga University before embarking on a successful career with companies like GE Financial, Chromalloy Gas Turbine Corporation and Title Guaranty of Hawaii.

    As managing partner at Island Sotheby's International Realty, she is committed to both professional excellence and community engagement.

    Tamayose strives to make a lasting impact in the world of business while preserving the beauty of Hawaii.

  • Marci Sato, Treasurer

    Marci currently serves as the County of Maui’s Accounting Administrator. Born and raised in Upcountry Maui, Sato is a graduate of Maui High School.

    She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with an accounting concentration from the University of New Mexico and is also a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Hawaii.

    Prior to her current role, Marci has served Maui County in previous capacities such Deputy Director of Finance and budget specialist in the Mayor’s Office. Sato has over 20 years of experience in accounting and finance in both the public and private sectors.

  • Vernon Patao, Board Member & Past President

    Vernon is a two-time Olympian and represented Team USA at Barcelona in 1992 and at Atlanta in 1996- a lifetime achievement since his Olympic dream began when he was a fourth-grader.

    After nearly 2 decades away from competition and heavy lifting, Vernon continues his lifetime mission of perpetuating the legacy of “Doc” Yogi. While is specialty is in weightlifting, he focuses on the wellness and fitness of his youth members. He owns and operates HI Performance Athletics where they cater to underprivileged youth with open doors (no membership needed).

    Vernon graduated from Maui High School in 1988, is a father of three sons, and attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa. A veteran fireman of over 25 years at the Maui County Fire Department, he currently serves as a captain. Vernon is also a scratch golfer-a very good golfer. He will continue to live life to the fullest around family, friends, and fitness.

  • Linda Nguyen, Board Member

    As a passionate advocate for youth empowerment and growth, Linda Nguyen, OD brings conviction and dedication to The Vernon Patao Foundation.

    Sports and athletics has always been a part of Linda's life from high school volleyball, softball and basketball to intramural field hockey in college and USTA Tennis League as a working professional. Athletics has the privilege of both opportunity and pressure which builds mental toughness. Such has served Linda in both her career as an Optometrist and Chief Executive at Maui Optometry.

    Linda firmly believes that investing in young minds and bodies is key to shaping a brighter future. Together with The Vernon Patao Foundation, Linda hopes to touch the lives of Maui's youth, helping them to build essential life skills, discover their unique talents and become strong, resilient individuals.

    Linda has enjoyed traveling the world while helping the world see, on OneSight mission trips to India, Nicaragua, Mexico, Thailand, Chile and she hopes to continue to serve the global community annually.

  • Valerie Matsunaga, Board Member

    Since retiring from Kaiser Permanente in 2015, after 30 years as a Pharmacist Manager and Clinical Pharmacist, Val continues to serve as Pharmacy Instructor and Program Coordinator for the Pharmacy Technician Certificate Program at U.H. Maui College and helps with coordinating externships and job placement in local pharmacies.

    Serving the community has been her life’s work. Matsunaga is currently Maui County Sister City Foundation’s Chair, Nisei Veteran Memorial Board member and has been with the Hale Mahaolu Board since 2002 and currently serves as Treasurer. Past community leadership positions include roles with Hale Makua, Imua Rehabilitation, and Kahului Union Church.

    Fitness and wellness is a lifestyle for Matsunaga. As a USAW Level 1 Coach and Certified Yoga 200 Instructor she coaches youths and adults at all levels and has been been competing internationally as a Master’s Athlete since 2015.

    An interesting, fun fact is that Val has appeared in various film and television roles and has been a member with the Screen Actors Guild since 2020.
